Week 5 2016 Coaching 2

This week, the readings are detailed discussions about the different aspects of the coaching cycle. They include goal setting, modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and observing. Remember that although all of them are part of the coaching cycle, each can be done separately when you are coaching (such as creating SMART goals for learning with the person you are coaching) before deciding which other parts of the cycle you need to implement. Before you read, think about the brief descriptions that you read in Strategy 18 this past week. Which of the activities do you think you have a good idea of how to do so it is a strength? Which one are you most interested in reading about and discussing with your group?
You will need to read all of the strategies, and as you do, think about if and how you will implement it with the person you are coaching. Blog about what learned and if you have questions that you would like input from your team. Be sure to let me know if you have questions for me to weigh in on as well.  I'll be reading your responses to my blog on Monday and your blogs on Wednesday and Thursday.

A couple of reminders: Your Survey results are due at the end of Week 6 (so Saturday, Sept.30).  Please fill out the Virtual Check in form (link here: https://goo.gl/forms/SL1heLwOUwWZIEw73
You will also need to arrange an online meeting with each other to disucss your results and give each other suggestions for the PD plan.  I posted a couple of examples on D2L.
Have a good week.

  1. Which strategies do you think you have a good idea of how to do so it is a strength?

When looking at the coaching cycle I think that there were many parts I have experienced when I was a new teacher. I had a mentor teacher my first year of teaching and we would make goals, she would model lessons for me, we would plan together and she would make observations. I don’t think we knew we were going through the coaching cycle but after reading Strategy 18 it was clear that we were doing parts of the cycle. I think that I think the goal setting and observation stages of the cycle are areas in which I have the most experience. I think good teachers constantly make goals each year to achieve and the goal setting part of the cycle is no different. Making observations is also something that I enjoy when observing other teachers because watching others teach always give me inspiration. With the caching cycle there is more to the observation stage but it is something that I feel comfortable doing and have experience with.

I am mostly interested in seeing what the co-teaching and co-planning stages entail. With co-teaching both the coach and the teacher work together to teach a lesson. I think it would be very effective for both the students and the teachers to have two teachers in the room but I wonder what that would look like, how the lesson would be implemented and how it would work so that a coach does not overstep their boundaries in a classroom. I am also interested to read about the co-planning stage of the coaching cycle and how I can provide enough support as a teacher during the conference part of planning.

Even though my time in the classroom was short I had to opportunity to work with some amazing, seasoned and knowledgeable teachers, especially my next for neighbor (teacher) whom I adore. With that said I think because of her I think my strengths are more in the co-planning and co-teaching stages. I think when your fellow teachers make your time at work enjoyable then what you do becomes enjoyable. As a result of co-teaching with her other things became easier for me, like lesson planning, and goal setting. For the observation stage, I recall doing so to learn from others. I imagine when I become a seasoned teacher/coach I would be able to observe and be in a position to give constructive feedback. All-in-all I do feel that I have my strengths in co-planning and co-teaching and feel that because of the experiences I have had during these times, I have been come teacher I am today, even though I know I have a long way to go.

Again, because I am a novice educator I would love to gain more insight on all the strategies. However, if I had to choose one to discuss more than the others I would be most interested in reading about and discussing the setting goals, and observing strategies. In my opinion. It is important to have goals when setting out on a specific task. Goals help guide us as teachers as we strive each day to provide the best experience, environment and lessons for our students. Additionally, I think that during the observation sessions one must be very focused, and detailed orientated in order to give relevant feedback. I would like to get some pointers from you all about what you do during observations in order to ensure it goes smoothly etc.

  3. Which of the activities do you think you have a good idea of how to do so it is a strength?

The coaching cycle mentioned in last weeks reading seemed fairly logical. I can see the author’s connection to this cycle being a choreographed dance between the literacy coach and the person being worked with. For me, I think that the modeling stage of cycle comes naturally. I think this is probably due to my background as a teacher and serving as a mentor teacher for first-year teachers. Additionally, I think this process is something we use in the classroom daily. We are continually modeling different things for our students. This modeling help provide classroom management, but also help the student have clarification of the topic being taught.

In reading and our group discussions, I would like to focus on the procedures for observation. I think it is really important that the pre and post conferences are well organized and helpful. It is hard for me to visualize this without it feeling like a teacher evaluation, which is what it isn’t supposed to be. I think part of this will come out of the co-planning and co-teaching relationship. Given that I haven’t ever had to do this part formally, beyond a student intern or first-year teacher, this is the area I feel I need help with. Also, I would love to have the digital forms of the templates that the book mentions using. These forms look helpful to use for a variety of purposes.

  4. Which of the activities do you think you have a good idea of how to do so it is a strength?

I guess I could say that I have a good idea of Goal Setting. During the goal setting conference, the coach and teacher must establish goals for the cycle. In my opinion, I feel that when I have to come to a conclusion about anything important, it is in my best interest to ask for others’ opinions/input. Bouncing ideas back and forth as a coach to a teacher creates room for filtering unnecessary ideas. During this time, I would be in the position to understand what a teacher likes and how they function, thus establishing goals accordingly. I think it is always good to work with others for the purpose of setting goals for our students.

I am most interested in reading about and discussing the observation stage with my group. I think if what we are looking for during the observation stage is not itemized, the observation process will be pointless. It would be interesting to work together to devise a plan of what we will be looking for during observation and in turn how to relay constructive criticism in the end.
