Week 15 Revisiting your view of yourself as a literacy leader

Each of you have come a long way on your journey to be literacy leaders where ever you are now and in whatever role you take on. I'd like for you to reflect on your growth as a literacy leader from the beginning of the semester.  Revise your glog to demonstrate that growth.  When you respond to this blog, embed your link to your glog in the comment.  Also briefly summarize where you think your greatest area of growth has been and why you think that is your greatest area of growth. Please do this by Dec. 3 at 5 pm.
Return to this blog after that time.  Using the links provided you, visit the glog of each of the other class members. What else do you see as their growth? Give one compliment about teh glog in general adn one compliment about how they have grown.  Please do this by Dec. 7 at midnight.  I'll be visiting as well.
By the time you read this, I'll have been in Kenya for about 10 days working with teachers there.  Part of our job is to help them become teacher leaders in early literacy. If I can, I'll upload pictures, or I'll add to this blog about my experiences, and what I am learning about myself as a literacy leader.

I think the area that I have grown the most is in the area of communication. I used to be afraid and intimidated when communicating with my peers. Especially my peers that have been teaching a lot longer than myself. I would wonder what I had to offer these seasoned teachers. Through this whole process though, I have learned how to share thoughts, ideas, and suggestions with my peers in a way that is respectful, confident and involves them in the process as well.

    1. I enjoyed looking at your blog, and you did a great job compiling your information! I really like how you included your coaching video and the picture of the woman wearing many hats. You definitely fit that description!

I think that you've grown in communication as well. You seem to have become more comfortable expressing yourself and your opinions over the course of the semester, and I know that can be an extremely intimidating feat. I know you'll continue to become more comfortable communicating with others, but your compassion and desire to help will make others more receptive and open to what you have to say.

    2. I watched a few minutes of your video! Wow super job! You seemed so calm! I'd never have known you were intimated by communication! Doesn't show! I do understand that fear however!! Especially with teachers who have been there longer than you. I always think what could I possibly add to their knowledge? I like how you added your video!! I think it's interesting how you didn't realize how many hats your were prior to this class! Now you realize how vital your roll is! Keep up the good work!

    3. Jacqueline, I loved your video! Great job! I really liked your image of the person with the megaphone. It reminded me that our job as a LC is almost like a cheerleader for teachers at times. I think you summed it up so well when you talk about how many hats we were as coaches. We've worked together in several small groups before and I can say that you've always been respectful, honest, and willing to share ideas. Great work!!!

    4. Your glog is so well done! And I agree, I didn't realize at first how many different things literacy leadership can entail. I can tell that you've learned a lot about literacy leadership in general, but especially about being a reflective leader. I think that's been an area of growth for you, especially based on your blogs and hearing you talk about your work this semester.

    5. Jacqueline, I really enjoyed your glog. I really liked your graphics. I liked how you included what a LC's job entails. I liked how you included your video. You did a really great job. I think not only did you grow in communication but just being reflective in your work.

I feel that I have grown most in collaboration this semester. I usually work by myself and for myself. This semester I learned how important it is to collaborate with teaches in order to reach a common goal....to help students and to become effective teachers in literacy. I have also learned to reflect on my work with teachers and learn what ways worked and what ways can be worked on. I feel more confident sharing my thoughts and ideas with the teachers of my school.

    1. I enjoyed your glog! I thought your reflections were insightful and your graphics were reflective and symbolic.

Collaboration can be tough, especially when you're more comfortable working alone! I can see that you've grown in collaboration, but I also feel that you've grown in your ability to reflect. Your growth in self-reflection allowed you to not only acknowledge collaboration's effectiveness and the benefits from engaging in more collaboration but also to actively seek opportunities to collaborate.

    2. That's great you figured out how important collaborating is! I'm sure your work load has been cut in half. Now you have more time and energy to focus on your kids! I'm sure they are feeling and seeing it! I think that's great you have been reflecting on your teaching. It can be very humbling at times. Yet, if we don't reflect I don't think we improve! I think this class has allowed us to all learn how to reflect effectively! It had fun to work with your this semester! I'd be honored to work along side you as a teacher! You're an assets!

    3. Erin,

Great job on your blog. I think it is so important that you realize how vital collaboration is to your role as a literacy coach. Since literacy coaches work with so many different people throughout the school, effective collaboration is key. This class really helped me figure that out as well. I also like how you added in making goals with other teachers. I think that is such a great characteristic to be able to sit down with a teacher and help he or she figure out what they want to work on.

      Great job this semester!!

    4. Erin, my favorite part of your Glog is the comment about self-reflection being humbling. That is so right! I love that you're so honest and say that you usually work by yourself and for yourself. I think we all do that at times. It's wonderful that you feel more confident in collaborating with others and know how important it is for a LC. I feel that our group collaborated well together, especially when we worked on our group reflection. I really appreciate you!

    5. Very well done! I like how reflective your glog is. I agree, self-reflection can be super humbling. I think we really are our own worst critics, but maybe that's a good thing sometimes. I like what you said you learned about professionalism, in terms of following through with teachers on the actions that you offer. While I didn't work as closely with you as some of the others here this semester, it sounds like you are a very reflective teacher, and it sounds like you have learned more about what it means to be a professional. Those are great lessons that I want to take away too!

    6. Erin, Thanks for your honesty! Good luck next semester....I hear you may have a student teacher!

It's difficult to choose just one area when thinking about my greatest growth, but I feel so much stronger in my ability to work collaboratively with my staff. I think that I've spent a lot of time telling them what I want them to do instead of really including them in the decision making. I feel confident that I have tools and techniques to improve my relationships and work more closely as a team. I also feel that I've grown so much as a reflective practitioner.

    1. Your glog is creative, and it's easy to connect to your reflections and see your growth!

Through your glog and the few interactions we've had in class and online, I can see your growth in collaboration as well. Opening up and actively seeking collaborative input from others can be difficult, especially when a lack of time, stress, and other stressors are pushing for decisions to be made quickly. Once we can start collaborating, though, things begin to work a bit smoother! Good job!

    2. Glog looks fantastic! That's great you've grown in your ability to work closely with others! Delivering hard messages is never easy! I'm sure as a director you, at times, have to do this. I can see this class has helped you learn to do that effectively! Seems like you've learned some great way to work collaboratively with your staff. Reflecting over our past blogs, you had some great suggestions on how you were going to do that! I know that will benefit your center!

    3. Julie,

I am loving your blog! Nice work! I really like how you talked about how you have grown and become more reflective. I think that marks a true professional, one that is able to reflect on teaching and growth. Reflection is a way of monitoring yourself and see what you as an individual needs to look at. I think you have definitely done a great job of doing that all semester. You have always seemed very willing to look at yourself as an educator!

      You did amazing this semester!

    5. Great glog! I agree with you that you have seemed to learn a lot about what it means to be a leader working with others. I think that involves a lot of the elements that you mentioned. You seem to have become a strong collaborator and coach, and I think you probably incorporate that into several aspects of your work at the center. I loved seeing you talk about advocacy, too! I think that is so important.

    6. Julie,
What a great glog. I loved your different sections. The section that you shared about reflection. I love that you go back and review your journal entries. I think not only have you grown in reflection but even more so with collaborating with your staff. I really enjoyed working with you this semester.

I feel my greatest area of growth was professional development. I am not sure why I previously thought that creating professional developments would be extremely difficult, but I did! After walking through the steps, though, and creating my own in class, it isn't nearly as intimidating. If I keep in mind that it is an extremely detailed lesson plan, it comes together quite nicely.

    1. That's funny I felt that PD was quite opposite! I never thought it would be so detailed. Maybe because some of the PDs I've attended, the people conducting them didn't put much thought or organization into them! That's great it has come so easy for you! That seems to be a strength for you! Definitely something you should pursue for your school district! You'd be an assets with helping develop PD plans!!

Your blog is great! There is so much information! You know a lot!! You seem very organized and I know this will be beneficial as a literacy leader!

    2. Wow! Your glog is very detailed. Nice job. I agree with Kaitlin, I didn't realize how much work went into a professional development either. I did notice that you seemed to work with your professional development and your grant with ease. I'm glad that went easily for you, because that will definitely come in handy in the future.

Great job this semester. Thanks for all your feedback and input!

    3. Melissa, your glog is FANTASTIC! I absolutely love the visuals! My favorite is when you talk about LCs "studying the bones". Love that. I think it's great that you have so much confidence now in creating PD plans. We've all learned how important PD is and it's wonderful that you're not intimiated by how detailed it can be. I've really enjoyed listening to your ideas and thoughts in class. Great work!

    4. Awesome glog, Melissa! Based on my work with you this semester, and based on your glog, I think you've got a lot of strengths and areas of growth. I think your biggest area of growth, though, is that you now realize that the tasks of a literacy leader are approachable and do-able. You are capable of being a great literacy leader, and I think you know now that it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Well done!

    5. What a creative glog!!! I really enjoyed your graphics. My favorite was the skeleton and studying the bones. I do have to agree with you about growth in Professional Development. What a great experience we had this semester with building our knowledge in the area.

  5. I think the area I've had the greatest growth is coaching. Obviously I will need many more times to practice, but I feel I have an understanding of what it entails. The more practice with coaching the better I Will get. I also feel another area of growth was PD. I never knew all that went into planning PD. I feel bad for ever complaining about PD that I've attended. I didn't really understand there were different types and purposes. I now have an understanding of all the work that went into the different PDs I have attended.

    2. Kaitlin,

Great job on your blog! You have definitely grown over the entire semester, and I know you are going to be a great literacy coach. Putting together a professional development does take quite a bit of time and planning, but you are very organized and knowledgable so I think that you will continue to excel in that area. Great job!!

    3. Kaitlin, your glog is great! You're always so creative! I liked your statement of creating a hospital environment. That is so important! I'm with you.....I knew PD was work, but until I planned an ongoing PD I had no idea just how much work and detail went into it. No, I don't think I'll complain as much either. lol As for coaching, I think you'll be wonderful. Your video was great! After working in a group with you, I think you give thoughtful feedback and you're always willing to listen. Thank you for everything! Great job!

    4. Fantastic work! My favorite part was your discussion of the four roles for a literacy coach. I think one of your biggest areas of growth is your ability to work with people in various contexts and for various purposes. You seem to have a great grasp on what it means to be an advocate, a collaborator, a facilitator, and a consultant--all of which require a different approach to working with people.

    5. Great glog! I really like how you placed the rolls you will have as a LC. I agree. I really enjoyed working with you this semester. Other then growing in coaching I think that you really grew more in collaborating with others.

  6. http://acriddles.edu.glogster.com/literacy-leader-developing/ I am SO sorry, guys! I got my due dates mixed up between this class and Dr. Ruan's class. :(

I think the area that I had the biggest growth in was facilitating coaching. One of my primary goals this semester was to become a better leader and learn more about leadership skills, and I think I've learned more about interacting with others as a leader, particularly in the context of literacy coaching.

    1. Great glog, Angela! I really like how your new literacy leadership goals are so prominent. I definitely get a feel for where you are and where you want to be in the future. Love it! You're a natural leader to me, so I'm excited to read that you're meeting your leadership goals. I always learn something new when I get to work with you. :) Great job!

    2. Angela,

Awesome job on the glog! Just from working with you in a group, you have been great interacting with others. You gave me some really helpful and constructive feedback, which helped me to grow as a literacy coach. I loved watching your coaching video, so I can see how you would note that as an area of growth. You asked some really thought provoking questions, that really helped the teacher you were working with to do some reflecting on her own teaching practices.

      Great job!

    3. Super job! You are so organized! I think that's your greatest strength! That's evident in your glog! You also have wonderful people skills! That will be such an assets when you coach or use them for literacy leadership! Great job!
