Week 5 Coaching 2

What insightful blogs you all have.  Thanks for your thoughtfulness in your own blog and in your responses. And don't worry about a few blips in this technology thing.
This week, the readings are detailed discussions about the different aspects of the coaching cycle. They include goal setting, modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and observing. Remember that although all of them are part of the coaching cycle, each can be done separately when you are coaching (such as creating SMART goals for learning with the person you are coaching before deciding which other parts of the cycle you need to implement. Before you read, think about the brief descriptions that you read in Strategy 18 this past week. Which of the activities do you think you have a good idea of how to do so it is a strength? Which one are you most interested in reading about and discussing with your group?
You will need to read all of the strategies, and as you do, think about if and how you will implement it with the person you are coaching. Blog about what learned and if you have questions that you would like input from your team. Be sure to let me know if you have questions for me to weigh in on as well.  I'll be reading your responses to my blog on Monday and your blogs on Wednesday and Thursday.
Have a good week.

  1. After rereading strategy 18, I think I have a good idea how to model a lesson. Since I haven't yet done any of the other sequences in the goal cycle, but I have taught lessons. I believe I could easily plan, co plan, model, and post lesson conference on a modeled lessons. I feel pretty confident this would come easy to me.

I am still interested in co-teaching. I have had an assistant in the past so I have done some co-teaching lessons, but I'd still like to get some ideas on how exactly everyone envisions this. This could be done so many ways. I also am interested in reading about the goal setting lesson. Since this is the area that begins the whole process, I want to make sure when I goal set with my teacher it is meaningful and time is used efficiently.

  2. Modeling is the sequence I'm most confident with. I think it comes from modeling group read alouds and journals for my Kindergarten teaching assistant. I feel like I'm capable of focusing on what's most important during a modeling session.

I'm very interested in reading more about Goal Setting. After the readings we've had, I see the importance of setting realistic and obtainable goals. I'm looking forward to input from my group on helping my teacher set goals that are important to her growth.

  3. I agree with Julie and Kaitlin, I would say I feel most comfortable with modeling. I am sure that is largely due to the fact that I modeling strategies with my students. Since I have experience in modeling, I feel like this is my strong area. Explicit teaching is important in this area.

I am also interested in the goal setting. I feel like this is such an important part of coaching. Going through our own goal setting in class has me interested in how to help someone else set their own personal goals. How to help them think of what is obtainable and in what time frame. Since goal setting is the beginning step of coaching, this is one area I would love to feel more comfortable in.

  4. I feel that my strengths will be the Co-planning sections of the cycle because I do so much of this with my grade level team. This part of the cycle to me seems the most collaborative and a great opportunity for both the coach's and teacher's strengths to be shown. I also think that this is a very valuable step into better understanding the co-teaching aspect of the cycle.

For me the co-teaching will be the section that I feel weakest about, and the strategy I will want to most information about. I am just nervous about not stepping on the teacher's toes and creating a great balance within their classroom to were the students will feel like there is an aligned force in the room.

  5. I am most comfortable with co-planning as well. My content area partner, our co-teacher, and I plan together quite frequently, and we are able to discuss goals, approaches, and strategies that will best help our students. We also co-plan with the other grade levels effectively too.

I would like more information about goal setting. I feel I do okay with my own, but I want to be as effective as possible when helping someone else create their own. I also want to make sure that they are obtainable and broken down into steps that could easily be incorporated into the coaching cycle.

  6. I think I would be most comfortable modeling. With the experience I have in the classroom teaching literacy in whole groups and small groups, I think that I have the confidence to demonstrate techniques to the teacher I am going to coach.

I think I am most interested in reading about co-teaching. I have shared a room with a special ed. teacher before and we would work together at times but it wasn't quite the co-teaching experience that I felt was the most effective. I would like to work with a teacher to implement a lesson to see the effectiveness of co-teaching.

  7. I feel I'm pretty good at co-planning. I I like collaborating with my peers, sharing ideas, and putting together something better than we could have done alone. Of course I also think I'd make a great observer because I'm a good listener and note-taker.

One thing I think I need to work on is modeling. I do a good job of modeling strategies and lessons with my students, but I'm not used to teaching other adults and it makes me a little nervous. I'm going to keep reading and talking to the teacher I'll be coaching, so I can feel as prepared as possible. The good thing is that I'm coaching someone who is a fairly good friend of mine, so I know she'll make it easier on me.

  8. I think my strength would either be goal setting or co-teaching. I'm pretty used to goal setting in my academic and professional settings, and we did practice it a couple of weeks ago with our professional learning plans. I think I would have a fairly strong sense of how to approach the co-teaching part of the cycle, since I'm currently learning how to use co-teaching in some of my own classes.

I would personally like to learn more about co-planning and observing. I am interested in seeing how I can accomplish those things in a situation in which I am trying to rely on facilitation. I want to know how to facilitate the planning without being overbearing, and I want to know what to look for in my observations. I'm doing the first official planning session with my teacher-partner Tuesday, so hopefully it goes well in spite of my anxiety about it!
